BE RESOURCEFUL
From
the built-in
coatrack in the entry
to bookcases in the
bedroom, the Bergers
looked for ways to
build storage into plain
walls. “We used up
every dead space that
we could," Rachel says.
FIND A HAPPY
MEDIUM “We wanted
to honor traditional
elements but keep the
house flowing for the
way we live," Josh says.
For example, there’s
a traditional living
room, but with a wide
doorway and half-wall
it seems modern
and welcom
ing.
THINK LONG TERM
The Bergers justified
the little extras, such as
wainscoting, as money
well spent. “It’s classic,
and we wanted a
home we’d enjoy—
something that was
us,” Rachel says.
QUIET TIME
“I wanted a sunny spot
to sit and read,” Rachel
says of the corner she
claimed as a reading
nook in the master
bedroom,
above.
The
built-in provides space
for books and
magazines. Neutral-
color storage binders
and boxes keep
shelves tidy.
CLEAN AND CLASSIC
Hexagonal tiles and a
paneled backsplash
and tub surround
bring vintage flavor to
the master bath,
right.
Josh chose the paint
colors. “New
homes
often have white walls,
but w
ith all the white
trim we needed color,”
he says. “We wanted
upbeat, light, and
whimsical colors.” i®
